A terrible thing has happened to Canadian and American womanhood. It is called “back combing”. For those uninformed males I hasten to explain that "back combing" is a process whereby the female of the species combs her hair in toward the scalp rather than from the roots to the tip of the hair. After back combing and before arranging, the head looks like an exploding straw stack. She would get the same effect by sticking a damp toe in a live electric socket. Women and girls by the millions have switched to back combing and never can I remember the female looking more ridiculous. Just so I can remember what a woman is supposed to look like from the neck up, I dig out old pictures of my mother when she was a girl. In those days hair was really a woman's crowning glory. True, many of them wore their hair in buns or twirled in a little nest on top of the head, but when the pins came out and the hair fell down over her shoulders in a beautiful glittering cascade, why even the stronger man would perspire and quiver with delight. As I look at the bleached out, multicolored course hay that passes for hair on so many women today, I can only hope that the female’s native good sense will soon release her from back combing and all the other ridiculous nonsense surrounding the doing of hair, 1962
