Edgar Guest, the poet, is a pretty positive character. Have you ever considered what might have happened to his writings had he been born a cynic? Just for fun today let's speculate on one of his better known versus:

Somebody said that it couldn't be done

But with a chuckle he replied,

"Perhaps it couldn't," but he would be one

Who wouldn't say no till he tried.

So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin,

He was fully prepared to quit.

He started to sing as he tackled the thing,

Then proceeded to blow the whole bit.

Somebody scoffed "Oh you'll never do that,"

At least no one ever has done it.

But he took off his coat, and he took off his hat

And first thing you know, he’d begun it.

With a lift of his chin, and a bit of a grin,

Though the task had a little appeal,

He started to sing as he tackled the thing,

And completely queered the whole deal.

There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,

There are thousands to prophecy failure,

There are thousands to point out to you one by one,

The dangers that wait to assail you.

But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,

Like some simple oaf, smile sweetly,

Just start in to sing as you tackle the thing,

And then foul it up, quite completely!

Well, you can't be serious all the time. To those of you who are Edgar Guest fans, my apologies. I promise you, I'll never do it again.
