Canadians are not an eloquent people. Strangers in our country may even find us a little “stand-offish". We go about our business with no more than a casual interest in our business associates and our neighbors. We exchange our hello’s and good mornings and for the most part never become too involved with those about us. However, the true Canadian character does show through from time to time. I think you really come to appreciate this character when some tragedy strikes a Canadian home. Neighbors to whom you have only spoken in passing send over a plate of cookies, or a fresh baked cake. Business associates pitch in to help you through your trying times, taking over your duties as well as their own until such time as you "feel up to it” again. There are calls from the people down the block asking if there is anything they can do; people whom you thought didn't even know your name. At times like these there is a drawing together of the Canadian spirit. Little cards arrive from people long forgotten. Plates of cold cuts and bowls of potato salad arrive to tempt appetites neglected in hours of misery. No, Canadians are not an eloquent people. Or are they? For what is more eloquent than a fresh baked apple pie when the heart is heavy with misery and loss.
