John Barrymore said it. "Happiness usually comes in through a door we didn't even know we left open". I use that quotation frequently because I think it is one of the truest things man has ever uttered. All of us in the course of our lifetime seek contentment. Perhaps seek is not the best word. Maybe pursue is a better word. We chase this elusive happiness like it is the hardest thing in the world to catch. We were like the dogs at a greyhound race chasing the mechanical rabbit that we have no chance of overtaking. Well, where is contentment to be found? Contentment has so many faces. Contentment for me is an evening alone with an engrossing book. It is sitting talking with my sons on those rare occasions when they are silent and receptive to new and tall ideas. It is hours spent in the field on a warm fall day with a good friend hunting down the elusive grouse. It is the satisfaction of seeing new growth on the evergreen I planted this spring. It is the last lingering moments over strong hot coffee at the conclusion of a good meal. It is being with good friends who asked nothing of you but that you be yourself. Yes, contentment and happiness have many, many faces. I am happy when I look at my year-old son in the bath, with his healthy young body and bright eyes. I am content when I see that my oldest is growing into a worthwhile young man. If you would be content my friend, enjoy your own life without comparing it to that of another. Those who want much are always very much in need. If you would be happy, look around you and count all the blessings that are right there at your fire side. Above all remember that happiness usually comes in through the door you didn't even know you left open.
