You hear a great deal of criticism these days about the commercialization of Christmas. The large department stores take down the Halloween decorations and at the same time tack up the Christmas trimmings. Santa arrives in town early in November, and it would appear that everything is geared to making a dollar during the extended yuletide season. If you visit the stores anytime before Christmas, you'll find people milling about, shoving, pushing, trying to get that last minute shopping done. Well, I never worry too much about these charges of commercialization because I really don't think it "gets through" to the average person. When we approach the last few days before the big holiday, a wonderful change seems to come over people. It was so beautifully put in that old poem called ‘Yes Virginia There is a Santa Claus’. It said "for a few brief days, the harsh mechanism of the world slows down". I think that says everything there is to say about people and about business at Christmas time. All the hustle and bustle notwithstanding, people are warmer, more friendly, anxious to extend a good wish and a smile. There is something very unique about Christmas time that seems to bring out the very best in people. As the old popular song puts it, "too bad we can't have Christmas every day of the year."
